Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
