United Nations Ends Penalties on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting next week.
He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in December 2024, concluding over a decade of civil war.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
He had been subject to global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, previously associated with al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and to friendly nations for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the Middle East.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the United States in the current year. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to address the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
