Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson joined the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
