Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unneeded presents might be considered slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, although the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds donated to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items reportedly locked away in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

A complete inventory has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Presents

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Context

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and making Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to handle the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
