Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
