Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
