Brave Train Employee Endures Life-Threatening Wounds During Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train
A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save passengers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has suffered life-threatening injuries, police stated on Sunday.
Particulars of the Frightening Incident
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Consequences
The event on the weekend resulted in 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have now been released from hospital.
A bystander recorded the suspect waving a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” stated a senior police officer.
Labor Reaction and Appeals for Action
Train unions were swift to commend employees and demand more action. One union official said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and effective procedures in operation”.
A different association leader urged the rail company and government “to act quickly to examine security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Commended for Rapid Thinking
The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t stop the train in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” stated a association official.
Additional Information
Police stated they got the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer described at first wondering if the event was a Halloween prank, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to come forward with any additional details.
Train services on the affected line are anticipated to have disruption until Monday, with passengers recommended to postpone their journeys where possible.
Individuals with details that could assist the investigation are asked to contact police by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
