American Armed Forces Executes Lethal Attack in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
According to a senior defense official, the US military executed a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered increasing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
